Finchampstead Ridges

Parks & Walks

Finchampstead Ridges, Wellingtonia Avenue

The Finchampstead Ridges offer stunning panoramic views over Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey.

Did you know that the Ridges were shaped during the Ice Age? They are also one of the National Trust’s oldest acquisitions, having been in its care for over 100 years.

August & September is the perfect time to enjoy the stunning displays of pink heather, which grow really well here due to the acidic soil. There are large areas of heather in the open areas by the main road, Wellingtonia Avenue.

Free parking at the Simon's Wood Car Park RG45 6AE (3 min walk) or there are a few spaces on a layby on Wellingtonia Avenue. Access to Wellingtonia Avenue at the moment is via the Wokingham Road end (Jubilee Road end is closed)

There is a marked trail (red route) found on the main Information Board (near the parking lay-by), which offers a circular route to the viewing points, down a steep hill and into the woods, past a pond and eventually back up around to the viewing point.

Due to the steep paths, it's not ideal with a buggy, so you would need to consider a baby carrier instead.

You can extend your walk by following the Centenary Trail in Simon's Woods nearby, which is another of the many walks featured on our website.
