“Truth or illusion, George; you don’t know the difference.”
Edward Albee’s masterpiece 'Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' is coming to Wokingham Theatre in April. Set on a college campus in New England, the play closely centres around a married couple, George and Martha, who have a dark, intense and loving marriage. The play is set in just one evening, in 1962, going into the early morning, where they invite a younger couple, Nick and Honey, to their home for drinks after a faculty party.
The play explores many themes: illusion vs. reality, the complexity of human relationships, the disillusionment of middle age, and the destructive power of secrets. With Albee’s exceptional writing, it’s a play that is a masterpiece in the power and destruction of language. How deeply can people hurt each other? How deep and intense would a married couple go to proclaim their love?
This award-winning 20th Century drama was made even more iconic due to the 1966 film adaptation starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, which won five Academy Awards.
💬 “An enduring masterpiece.”
The Guardian
💬 “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? continues to fascinate and appeal.”
Tim Byrne
